Jayne Heggen - 100 Day Journey

As the saying goes “when you least expect it, expect it!” I received a wonderful sign that I’m heading in the right direction, on the right track. A boost I needed from an unexpected source.

I wish there had been a way to record my conversation while talking on my iPhone. And of course, after the call, I saw my little hand recorder just sitting on my desk. I pulled it out from my tech box about a month ago. I could have easily recorded my side of the conversation.

Note to self. Line up all tech before a call, because you never know. And add this to the checklist.

@POD9.5

It’s a cold day outside. As I began recording, my nose began to run, and then sinuses began to drain. I had water, which helped for a few seconds. I needed to stop frequently to clear.

There’s gotta be a better way. The editing was easy with all my frequent stops. But, how do I manage when I’m interviewing someone?

@POD9.5

Almost forgot to post! An amazing day, one to be grateful for.

Lot’s of environmental sounds today. The heat came on, the wind was blowing, lots of street sounds. And I forgot to put up my screen to help with the reverb, voice more staccato than usual with all the distractions.

I decided to edit the noise and remove the staccato pauses. I think it worked.

@POD9.5

Pretty sloppy today. I was in a rush closing down for The Christmas Holiday, cleaning the house getting ready to put up a few decorations. I missed my recording time window, so I quickly squeezed it in.

I thought auphonic might clean things up a bit. It made things worst. Good lesson, auphonic can not correct what’s not already recorded. Ship and go on to the next.

@POD9.5

would be good to get in the habit of @Journals too :slight_smile:

@craigconstantine Dah! Thanks for the nudge.

Happy Holidays!

058 Taking a Journey Rest

I didn’t intend to take a break in my recordings, and then I found I had no energy for my recordings.

Other priorities need to be addressed, and I must admit I’m tired of managing all my spinning plates. Time to catch my breath.

How many plates can I spin going forward? I’m not sure, but it can’t be all the ones I’m used to spinning.

I’ll head back out on my journey next week, after repacking a few things.

Wishing everyone a bright New Year full of opportunities.
Jayne

Mind you, at the moment, no one’s in there… still early days. :laughing:

@Jayne So proud of you Jayne! Good example too and understand the overhead, too many spinning plates - sharp edges when they crash.

Thank you @maryjlrowe It’s quite the mess to clean up :two_hearts: :broom:

I hope you are having a peaceful holiday and look forward to reconnecting in the New Year!

Day 60 of my 100-Day learning to use my voice journey. Repacking my bags.

I like the metaphor, @Jayne. And I admire your commitment to the 100 days…already at Day 60. Kudos!

Thank you @ChristiCassidy. It does feel like I’m going down a different path, of the same journey. I hope you had a restful holiday season. See you soon in POD10, if not before then.

I’m looking at all the stuff I want to pack for this new leg of my journey, and had to ask myself if I have the right bag?

Was a little more prepared today. Separating screen up, blinds closed (hated to do so, it’s the first day of sun in more than a week), and check my volumes. Played around with noise reduction, especially focusing on SSSSs. Now that I know what my SSSSs look like it’s pretty simple to remove from the whole recording.

I’m still liking audacity, that may change as I get into deeper edits.

The process of packing for my journey has become a useful and fun image for working through my plan for this year. Not a huge business plan, more of a conscious plan. Better yet, a framework to help me stay focused as I run into new experiences and situations.

I’ve been noticing a reverb or perhaps echo in my recordings. I listened to earlier recordings and the sound is not there. I’m wondering if my headphones are on the fritz.

What Is reverb versus echo? I found the following which suggests this is a reverb.
reverb and echo

Anyway, onward with my recording as I figure out if it’s my headphones or something else.

Talk about memories from the past! As I proceed with my pack, my business plan, I recalled 3-1-2 planning. It’s so simple and yet so powerful. I haven’t used this approach in what seems a millennium. Well, perhaps not quite that long ago.

I also played with mic placement, which seemed to help with the reverb. I’ve also been playing with what I call “universal” noise reduction. Looking for ways to reduce similar noises in a single step, instead of one by one. It seems I may be overdoing it :flushed:

I am thinking about how to apply 3-1-2 planning.

It dawned on me I’ve moved my linear thinking (step-by-step actions) into a strategic level for moving my work forward. And I realize the limitations I’ve placed on myself. Step-by-step keeps me from looking at potentiality unless something hits me over the head.

As I think about it, the potential for what’s next happens through the people I met along the way, the conversations held, the events and situations experienced. Pausing to process these learnings (3-1-2) will help me explore possibilities that may be around the next corner.

I can then decide to change my bags and/or repack what I’m carrying as I continue my journey.

I also learned I was over-editing [a.k.a rabbit hole]. I can visibly see how noise reduction affects the overall recording now. I’ll still use my universal noise reduction approach for environmental noise. The rest depends on how badly it bugs me.

So instead of looking for something to fix my S/P/Ts. I will pay more attention to hearing my voice to make those corrections.

Getting more serious about the pack. I’m looking at my destinations along my journey in three-month quarterly increments. I’m also thinking about the things I’m really good at, and what things I could use some help with. Maybe I don’t have to pack everything that’s laid out on the bed. It would make for such a lighter load to carry.

This is turning out to be a great planning and clarifying exercise.

Only two universal noise reductions for this recording. Left the rest along, with the exceptions of two big SSSs and a few environmental sounds the universal didn’t grab.

Needed to take a deep breath. A lot of resistance showed up, a lot of old energy to be released. I realized in my packing analogy that all the things I was stacking on my bed to possibly put into my bag were all representations of what was playing in my head, especially the worst-case scenarios.
