We spend a lot of time looking for ways to improve. But it’s really too much of a good thing.
I love that notion — it’s one I’ve tried to hold dear myself. Don’t be influenced too much. Be aware of what’s great, but don’t get other people’s work too deep in your head or you’ll be doing their work, not yours. That kind of influence isn’t really an influence, it’s a trap. ~ Jason Freid, from An influence or a trap?
I forget where I’ve read (and said) this before: But the tension we feel about wanting to improve, is simply the tension that pulls us forward doing our work.
I try to keep my urge to leap into the trap under control by remembering: For every minute I spend “improving”, I better be spending 100 minutes working. I’ve got plenty of work to do, so if I read just this one more little article . . . yikes! I better just get to work.
