Spotlight: Transcripts, yours - mine - theirs & nobodies

spotlight

As we constantly continue to discover Podcast Episode content that we find to be brilliant, the desire for a transcript becomes more vital. I’ve even gone so far as to sign up for a New York Times, trial subscription, just to get the Transcript. It’s not just personal but I share “news and views” in a weekly LIVE discussion group that gathers in our little town. So YES, I need a transcript to read and study as there’s no time to listen repeatedly while taking notes. Apparently the latest iPhone iOS upgrade MAKES Podcast transcripts but I’ve not checked that out yet. For my Podcast, I now post a transcript in a Substack newsletter, making the link topmost in the Show Notes. At this time, I do this mostly to easily access my own research and show links but also of course, for others who may want it. So the Spotlight topic in just a few words is:
SPOTLIGHT TOPIC 4/16/2024 - to be discussed here & now. Also on ZOOM, Tuesday 4/23/2024

  1. Do you want Transcripts?
  2. If so, how do you get them?
  3. Do you provide Transcripts
  4. If so where and how do you let listeners know?

 This topic is one of the Podcaster Community’s occasional Spotlights.

Each spotlight is an opportunity for the entire Podcaster Community: To provide deep, generous feedback on someone’s work; To brainstorm and give first-impressions on someone’s idea; To investigate or problem-solve someone’s issue.

Great topic, @maryjlrowe! I wasn’t sure what to do with the transcripts at first. Now I put them on Simplecast, but I know deep down I should also be putting them on my website alongside the respective episodes. I remember @craigconstantine had said something about “owning your transcripts.” It does make sense.

One thing that frustrates me is that Descript creates a transcript that I dutifully correct (not obsessively, but for basic names and places, that sort of thing). Then I give the WAV file to Podium.page to create show notes, and there’s nowhere to upload my transcript. It re-transcribes the audio! Seems like a waste of energy.

But me? I don’t tend to read them for other people’s shows. I do like the ability to search my own if I’m trying to remember what someone said.

Lots of food for thought!

My podcast STARTS with a transcript because I write it out word for word and time it - then record it. Yup - this is possible for “Host on Mic”. Plan to check out the iPhone podcast transcript thingy before next Tuesday as I do crave the ability to study favorite content - such as this one - a podcast created from a publicly delivered speech at the Long Now Foundation on Embodied Economics - how economic stories shape our world.

Oh Yay - I just saw that they have an automatically generated transcript.

Will definitely READ!

Here’s the video embedded/streamable…

@ChristiCassidy I’ve uploaded the video into the Podcaster Community’s Vimeo account. So long-term storage and serving it out to viewers is borne by the community’s account. You can remove the mp4 from your dropbox if you like.

@craigconstantine thank you! Much appreciated. I’ll take it out of my Dropbox now that you’ve posted it here.
